CYPRUS: A Magnificent Gastronomic Crossroad

Cypriot cuisine is a remarkable blend of Mediterranean influences with touches of Greek, Middle Eastern, Turkish, and European traditions. Renowned for its fresh ingredients, vibrant flavours, and deep historical roots, Cypriot food is a testament to the island’s fertile soil and sunny climate, which have fostered a rich agricultural heritage. The culinary star of Cyprus, halloumi cheese, made from goat’s and sheep’s milk, is often served grilled as part of a meze. Meze itself is an exquisite selection of flavourful dips such as tahini, tzatziki, and hummus, complemented by olives, as well as assorted meat and fish platters.

Signature dishes such as keftedes (meatballs), sheftalies (Cypriot sausages), and koupepia (stuffed vine leaves) reflect the depth of Cypriot gastronomy. Souvla, large chunks of meat grilled on skewers,and makaronia tou fournou (oven-baked macaroni with minced meat) are prepared with devotion for special occasions. At the heart of German gastronomy are staples such as meat, potatoes, and bread—long considered the foundation of everyday meals. These ingredients are prepared in countless regional variations, with each state adding its own flair and time-honoured methods.

Classic dishes like bratwurst (grilled sausage), schnitzel (breaded and fried cutlet), and sauerkraut (fermented cabbage) stand as national icons, each with regional twists that reflect local tastes. In Bavaria, for instance, Weisswurst (a delicate white sausage) is a staple, while the Rhineland may favour tangy sauerkraut or mustard-based schnitzel.
